What is Fetal reduction ?

Fetal reduction is the medical termination of a pregnancy which is performed because of higher order multiple gestation like twins or triplets or fetal abnormalities

When is Fetal reduction Done ?

It is usually done during 11 to 14 weeks of pregnancy after Nuchal Translucency scan to allow for structural abnormalities and chromosomal risk assessment as well as natural reduction of the fetus.

How to manage post Fetal reduction care?

It is recommended to stay in observation at the hospital as per doctor’s suggestion after the procedure. Post procedure the patient may experience some abdominal discomfort in which case simple painkillers like paracetamol can be taken. In case of severe pain, bleeding, fluid leakage through the vagina or a fever seek medical advice. A repeat scan should be done after a week.

How is Fetal reduction Done?

  • Local anaesthesia is administered.
  • During the procedure an ultrasound probe is used continuously to guide the needle.
  • Then a chemical generally Potassium Chloride is injected into the fetus's heart or chest cavity aiming to stop the heartbeat.

What are the risks associated with Fetal reduction ?

Complications of fetal reduction include miscarriage depending upon higher order of gestation.
